Communities in Lamu, Kenya Object to AfDB’s Role in Planned Coal Power Plant

Save Lamu, a community-based organization representing over 35 organizations, wrote to the African Development Bank (“AfDB”) demanding that it halt its preparation of a risk guarantee proposal associated with a planned coal power plant in Lamu County, Kenya.  Local communities are deeply concerned that this coal plant project is being developed without meaningful community consultation and without proper consideration of its potentially devastating environmental, social and cultural risks. Communities are concerned about the coal plant’s impacts on their health, their loss of access to traditional farming and fishing sites, pollution, and damage to the nearby World Heritage Site, Lamu Old Town.

Accountability Counsel is working closely with Save Lamu to ensure that communities’ concerns are heard by the AfDB.
