Affirming Our Commitment to Community-Centered Accountability
Accountability Counsel holds powerful institutions accountable to people and the planet. The Trump administration’s dismantling of environmental and human rights safeguards, promotion of extractive and fossil fuel projects, top-down decrees on what aid should be, and attacks on civil society organizations are a call to action.
We’re informed and inspired by local communities living near destructive projects who have long demanded that corporations and governments stop harming and start protecting their lives, livelihoods, and local environments. We know what to do in the face of authoritarian institutions clinging to impunity and will redouble our work alongside local communities demanding sustainable, rights-abiding, and community-led development projects.
If you’re seeking accountability and remedy for harms from an infrastructure, energy, extractive, or other type of corporate or government project anywhere in the world, reach out. We’re ready to amplify your demands.
The Trump administration is targeting historically marginalized peoples to quell resistance and consolidate power. All of us can keep power in check by holding it accountable to the people who are the most impacted. We call for accountability to and the centering of the rights and experiences of people being deported from the United States, trans people, Black people and people of color, Palestinians, and communities living near harmful U.S. government-backed projects, alongside everyone who the Trump administration is demonizing.
We know accountability is possible. We have seen it in practice. Accountability, when realized, looks like flourishing mangrove forests in Kenya, fertile farmland in Haiti, and clean water in Mongolia. Accountability promotes gender justice, unlocks sustainable climate solutions, and strengthens civic participation.
Our commitment to community-centered accountability is as strong as ever.
