Accountability Counsel welcomes the World Bank Board of Directors’ recent announcement on changes to the Bank’s accountability system. The changes, which reflect Accountability Counsel and partners’ recommendations, aim to create an institutional structure that allows the Inspection Panel to independently investigate allegations of harm to communities and the Dispute Resolution Service to effectively facilitate mediation and other dispute resolution processes.

Many details need to be decided to ensure that the implementation of this new structure works for affected communities. We look forward to providing our input on updated procedures to make the accountability processes as effective as possible for the communities who need them. We also call for a transparent and participatory process to address the other recommendations raised by the 2024 external review team’s report, including increasing the transparency of the DRS, strengthening the Panel’s monitoring mandate, and strengthening outreach to affected communities.
